After the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, Egypt remained part of the Easter part of the Empire, usually referred to as the Byzantine Empire, with capital in Constantinople. And a new part of Egyptian history emerged at this time, hand in hand with the birth of the Muslim religion. Egypt was conquered by the followers of Mohammed and became a Fatimid Caliphate, and it retained a lot of its former glory. The Christian churches that had replaced the temples to the ancient Gods were now themselves replaced with Mosques, and the country thrived once again under the new leadership.
