Air Travel

airYou hear it from almost everybody you have met.  “I enjoy the destination but I hate the travel”.  Most people do not to travel because of all the hassles that it entails.  Travelling by plane is said to be the safest but there are still certain discomforts that are inherent in plane rides.  Here are some ways to avoid or alleviate these discomforts.

1. Do not eat too much before boarding a plane- Even if you are not prone to having motion sickness, it is not advisable to travel with a full stomach.  If and when you do, you run the risk of throwing up on the plane or worse, have an unexpected bowel movement which is something that you would like to avoid at all costs.

2. Do not fasten your seatbelt too tightly- It is understandable for you to be concerned for your safety but fastening your seatbelt very tightly will not make you any safer that you already are.  It will only cause your blood flow to get constricted which might cause you to get dizzy or nauseous.  Try to relax and breathe normally.

3. Walking up and down the aisle is good for your circulation.  Once, the “fasten your seatbelt sign” is turned off and the in flight crew says it is ok to move around, get up and slowly walk up and down the plane to promote good blood circulation.  This will also decrease post plane ride fatigue because you will not be in one position during the whole flight.  Just make sure you will not disturb the other passengers who had chosen to sleep, read or just stay put.

4. Bring a comfortable headrest or a small pillow to cushion your neck so as to avoid any strain.  The last thing you want is a stiff neck when you land.

5. If at all possible, visit the bathroom before you board the plane or go right before takeoff.  There are only one or two bathrooms on the plane so go while you still can.
